# Paediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS) and System-wide Paediatric Observation Tracking (SPOT) **Category:** [Open Forum](https://forum.rcpch.tech/c/general/4) **Created:** 2025-11-10 19:28 UTC **Views:** 26 **Replies:** 3 **URL:** https://forum.rcpch.tech/t/paediatric-early-warning-scores-pews-and-system-wide-paediatric-observation-tracking-spot/625 --- ## Post #1 by @pacharanero We have had some discussions with various groups recently on supporting the development of integratable digital PEWS charts, built in a similar way to the way we developed the Digital Growth Chart component and API. This topic is to provide a space to bring together existing and preceding work on PEWS, SPOT and other similar initiatives, so that we are fully informed by the best research and innovation. ### Background RCPCH website summary of PEWS and SPOT https://www.rcpch.ac.uk/resources/UK-paediatric-early-warning-systems Example PDF PEWS Chart https://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/pews-observation-and-escalation-chart-0-11-months-updated.pdf --- ## Post #2 by @KirstenO Hi @pacharanero . This sounds like a great initiative. We can involve our colleagues in the Quality Improvement team here at the College who have worked on PEWS and SPOT as well as other patient safety programmes. Jonathan Bamber heads up the team and is probably the best contact. Let me know if you’d like me to introduce. --- ## Post #3 by @pacharanero I know @JBamber through M4C app work we've done together. I do think that PEWS/SPOT has to be high on the 'do it next' list, in terms of powerful clinical digital interventions that only an org like the RCPCH can deliver. It's a similar remit to dGC. We have track record delivering this kind of thing across the EPR market, the architectural choices we made for dGC would work similarly (but not identically) here. There is a potential (small) commercial return, it wouldn't be from paid API calls as with dGC, but possibly from compliance/conformance and user testing, with an RCPCH 'compliance certificate' awarded after completion. It could be made to be sustainable/cost neutral, but would need vision and investment to see it initiated. We don't currently have funding in the incubator to take this forward though. And I think it has to be led by College senior leadership/Council etc as a strategic decision. --- ## Post #4 by @JBamber Hi Marcus, Good to hear from you. When discussing this with Michael at Conference I stressed that I wasn't sure how we could take a more active role in an area being led by NHSE; however this might be my lack of imagination or understanding of how our leverage for this. Perhaps we could talk through in more detail and then bring in Mike as VP leading on SPOT? All the best, Jonathan --- **Canonical:** https://forum.rcpch.tech/t/paediatric-early-warning-scores-pews-and-system-wide-paediatric-observation-tracking-spot/625 **Original content:** https://forum.rcpch.tech/t/paediatric-early-warning-scores-pews-and-system-wide-paediatric-observation-tracking-spot/625
